As a toddler he contracted polio, which led to a speech obstacle. His mom taught him methods to whistle, to assist him overcome his stutter.

Emmett’s cousin Simeon Wright, 13, and Ruthie Mae Crawford, one other Black teenager, stated Emmett handed the cash for the bubble gum into Ms. Bryant’s hand, as an alternative of leaving it on the counter, as white Mississippians typically anticipated African People to do. Ms. Bryant stormed out to get a pistol from her automobile, she later testified. Simeon stated that Emmett then whistled at Ms. Bryant, and that their group grew to become afraid and left shortly.
